Dear Minister Price and other Federal election candidates for the Durack electorate,
We are primary producers in the Durack electorate - the second largest electorate in the world. We invite you to tell us how, if elected, you’ll help Durack be a proactive world leader in dealing with climate change for our vast electorate.
With 1oC warming already, the climate has changed in different ways in different places in Durack. We’re used to managing and mitigating risk in our highly variable climate. That's why many of us have been able to successfully adapt and continue producing food and fibre for millions of people across Australia and the world. But there are limits to adaptation. We would love Australia to collectively embrace the climate challenge and capitalise on our creativity, ingenuity and natural advantages to drive more innovation and ambition in climate solutions.
Minister Price and Durack electorate candidates, we are calling upon you to:
- Understand and accept the science of climate change, what is necessary to limit it, and the implications and opportunities that climate change and climate solutions present us in Durack;
- Have the courage and desire to act on this knowledge as our Member of Parliament; and
- Support Farmers for Climate Action’s call for an effectively funded and implemented national long-term plan on agriculture and climate change.
Climate damage is here, now -- in our vast backyard. In Durack we’re dealing with worsened hot spells and fire risk, longer frost risk, changed rainfall and temperatures. Across Australia we’re seeing catastrophic bushfires, floods, heatwaves and drought. Farmers are on the front lines. It’s time for vision, courage and action. The days of climate change being highly politicised are over. If elected, we will join you to help create the most prosperous and healthy future possible for Durack.
I live in Durack and I support this open letter.
