FCA condemns removal of emissions targets from NEG

Monday, 20 August 2018

Farmers for Climate Action CEO Verity Morgan-Schmidt today strongly condemned the Federal Government’s announcement that it had removed emissions reduction targets from the National Energy Guarantee.

‘The NEG has the potential to be an important step in breaking the ideological deadlock surrounding climate and energy policy, but to do so it needs strong emissions targets,' Ms Morgan-Schmidt said.

‘Farmers need energy certainty and they need action on climate if they are to continue to produce the food and fibre on which our people and our economy rely.

‘Right now 100% of NSW and more than 50% of Queensland is grappling with severe drought. Extreme weather events are set to occur with increasing frequency and severity if we fail to act on climate and set strong emissions targets.

‘Without strong emissions targets, the NEG won't create the certainty investors need to build clean energy and bring power prices down. Farmers need energy certainty in order to operate profitability and sustainably.

'As it stands, the future of Australian agriculture is being held to ransom by politicians who continue to fail to take action on climate change through meaningful policy.

'We strongly urge the Government to put aside ideology and to advance robust targets to reduce emissions, lower power prices and deliver a clean energy transition.'
