Michael grew up in southwest Queensland as the son of a cattleman and member of an extended family of primary producers from southern and central Queensland. He has family ties with landholders in the Galilee Basin. Michael is an experienced community organiser with over 20 years of experience. In recent years he has worked as an organiser for Solar Citizens in South Australia and as a key organiser in the fight against the Acland Coal mine expansion in southeast Queensland.
